INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Freight transportation company CSX announced Friday that effective immediately, all operations in the locomotive maintenance facility at the Avon, Indiana rail yard were being discontinued.
Management informed employees Friday. Some employees will be furloughed, but Rob Doolittle, a spokesperson for the company, said the the total number of affected employees is not yet available.
Doolittle's statement also said, "This decision was made as part of an ongoing, comprehensive review by CSX's management team to improve the company's efficiency, safety and service to customers across its 21,000-mile network."
Of those 21,000 miles, 2,600 of them operate in Indiana.
At the end of 2015, CSX employed more than 1,700 people, and had reported more than $177 million for their compensation.
No announcement has been made about any other operations at the Avon location.
