"We wanted a name that would better reflect the grassroots community happening here," said Rachel Ferguson, Teagen Development vice president.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Circle City Industrial Complex on Indy's near east side has been renamed the Factory Arts District "effective immediately," owner Teagen Development announced Tuesday.

The property used to be home to the Schwitzer manufacturing facility. It was named the Circle City Industrial Complex when Schwitzer left the property in the 1990s. Teagen Development then bought the property in 2015.

“As the building changed, we realized that the name ‘Circle City Industrial Complex’ just didn’t describe what was happening inside these walls,” said Rachel Ferguson, Teagen Development vice president. “Spaces that were once filled with machines and equipment, that were used to test engines and fabricate parts, are now filled with craft brewers and distillers, art studios, galleries, and small businesses. We wanted a name that would better reflect the grassroots community happening here.”

The name Factory Arts District is a homage to the property’s industrial roots, as well as to its present and future as a place for art, culture, and community, according to a news release.

Officials said Teagen is also unveiling names for each of the buildings located within the district. 1125 Brookside Avenue will now be called Factory Arts North, and 1011 Massachusetts Avenue will now be called Factory Arts South.

"Factory Arts North provides affordable work spaces for artists, makers, and other small businesses. Factory Arts South will offer more public gathering spaces, such as restaurants, local retailers, services such as bike repair and a hair salon, and an event center," Teagon Development said in a news release.

The Factory Arts South businesses will open later this fall.
