Burger Study to close in downtown Indy

Owner Huse Culinary will shut down its restaurant after a three-year run. Employees will be offered jobs at other restaurants.

INDIANAPOLIS — Citing a loss of business due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Burger Study on Georgia Street in downtown Indianapolis will close permanently on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Opened in 2017 by Huse Culinary, which also owns and operates St. Elmo Steakhouse and Harry & Izzy's in the same downtown area, Burger Study targeted office workers, sporting events, conventions, concerts and business travelers. According to a closing announcement shared by Huse, "The restaurant saw double-digit, year-over-year sales increases into 2020 and its future was bright before the COVID-19 pandemic hit."

But now, operations are unsustainable, according to president Craig Huse.

“While we faced a difficult business decision to close Burger Study," Huse said, "We are viewing this as an opportunity to get even stronger at every other Huse Culinary restaurant.” Burger Study employees will be offered jobs at a companion restaurant "that is equal to or greater than their current role."

Huse said the company's steakhouses continue to maintain good customer traffic despite the pandemic.

“Because St. Elmo and Harry & Izzy’s are destination restaurants, they have given Hoosiers, and other visitors, a reason to travel downtown."
