SULLIVAN, Ind. — A western Indiana animal shelter is working to reunite pets with their families after last Friday's deadly tornado.
The Humane Society of Sullivan County has been busy caring for animals found after the storm and sharing photos of pets who are looking to be reunited. The shelter said Monday they had 13 dogs that would not be going back to their owner and six pregnant cats that "will most likely turn into 30-plus cats in the very near future."
Three people died and at least eight others were injured when an EF3 tornado hit the city Friday night.
The humane society said they received a donation of $1,000 to buy dog food for the lost animals, but were still looking for help with other supplies, including slip leads, cat kennels and monetary donations to offset the cost of exams for the animals that come to the shelter.
"We have to remember that this is not a sprint race, but a marathon and families affected by this disaster will be in need of assistance for months to come," the humane society wrote in the post.
Donations can be made at the shelter at 2425 N. Section St., Sullivan, IN 47882 or via PayPal. You can also call the shelter at 812-268-4201 or text 812-240-5480 to make arrangements for donations or to share a photo of a lost pet.
The shelter has also posted several photos on its Facebook page of pets that have been found on the streets or in live traps put out by the humane society.
