INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis is giving people a better idea of the magnitude of the new Indianapolis Animal Care Services shelter in its request for proposals on the construction.
According to the request, current plans are for a 72,000-square-foot shelter. In comparison, the current shelter is 24,000 square feet.
It will be built at 5001 E. Raymond St. on the southeast side, which is the former Clearstream property.
The new shelter will be located in the 46203 zip code, which the City of Indianapolis said is historically the second-highest zip code in Marion County for stray pickups and animal control-related runs.
“Relocating to a new site was the first step to accelerate the timeline of this much-needed project,” Mayor Joe Hogsett said. “With today’s announcement, we are even closer to construction of a modern facility that will significantly increase Indy’s animal shelter capacity while also improving services.”
Funding for the facility includes a $20 million bond approved by the City-County Council.
Friends of Indy Animals has 99% committed of its $7 million "Journey Home" capital campaign from more than 80 individuals, families, foundations and companies.
IACS posted Friday about its capacity for care. It noted that while it was able to have 131 dogs and cats leave the building this past week to adopters, fosters, rescues, off-site partners, etc. — the shelter brought in 139 dogs and cats.
Reponses to the request for proposal for construction are due by noon on April 19, 2024. Those interested in bidding should click here.
