The Comeback: Tips to help families through e-Learning

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Now that spring break is over for some school kids, they returned "to school" via studying at home.

With schools now officially closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year, this means modified teaching and cancellations of major school events. But 13News Anchor Andrea Morehead found some parents to share their tips to help everyone successfully end the semester.

TIP 1: Set a schedule!

Coach Suzette Sweatt said it's important that she set aside Sunday for virtual reading with her 12-, 7- and 8-year-old grandchildren.

Twitter user "April 10" said her son has a set routine for his at-home learning. (Twitter/April10)

Twitter user "April 10" said her son's schedule includes workout time, chores, meal preparation, prayer and bible study.

Lisa Blair Terrell is a school teacher so she's doing double duty by teaching her 7 and 11-year-olds and her high school students online. Her daughter added dolls to her learning session.

TIP 2: Take breaks and exercise

Iilesha Sherrer said during "recess" at home, her kids choose to play basketball together. (Twitter/Illesha Sherrer)

IIesha Sherer sent us a picture saying that you should make sure you give kids time for recess. Her fifth-, 10th- and 12th-graders play basketball during that time.

TIP 3: Stay connected to school friends

Devon Mitchell starts teaching early with her three children and when they've done all of their work, they get to make a FaceTime call with a friend.

TIP 4: Celebrate milestones

Kelly Bauder, whose daughter missed her induction into the National Junior Honor Society, wanted to make sure this milestone was celebrated, so they had a ceremony at home to acknowledge her accomplishments.

Her brother is an National Honor Society member and helped with the formalities. Other family members and her daughter's teachers sent celebratory messages.

Just remember we're all in this together.

April encourages parents to, 'Give yourself grace and mercy. Just be the best you can be for your child."

On behalf of 13News, a big thank you to all of our teachers across central Indiana and the state for your hard work during this time, sharing with parents your lesson plans and being available, often virtually. We're all in this together.
