13News Anchor Andrea Morehead has been dissecting this pandemic crisis with the help of a licensed therapist.
Last week, we discovered that the "c" in crisis stands for care -- caring for ourselves and others.
This week, we're tackling the letter "r" as we search for ways to set the stage for "The Comeback" during this uncertain time.
INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – Licensed therapist NaKaisha Tolbert-Banks says the "r" in the word crisis stands for "respect for self and others."
"You're talking about stress, you're talking about a lot of different emotions sometimes throughout the course of a day, you're up one minute and down the next minute so that respect for self and others really comes in because you want to ensure that we are respecting other people and where they may be as well," Tolbert-Banks said.
During this quarantine period, some people are facing their fears and starting over. It's a chance to rebuild what you want and make intentional decisions for a totally different life.
"We're talking about again knowing where we are in a crisis, how we're coping and even maybe how we're coming off to other people," Tolbert-Banks said. "Are we setting boundaries, are we respecting our own boundaries?"
And setting those boundaries may also be challenging with our children.
"So with a lot of parents, it may be limiting screen time, but then tomorrow you need to give a little bit more screen time but being flexible and understanding that I just have to respect where I am in this process, because a crisis is never easy," Tolbert-Banks said. "But if you're flexible and you give yourself a little bit of wiggle room to just be present in that, and children as well, I think we navigate a little bit easier."
Tolbert-Banks says respect for self and others will help all of us to be the type of person that no matter where you go or where you are, you always add value to the lives of others around you.
"We want our kids to thrive in the crisis and we're also teaching them helpful tools that they need to navigate through all of this change that's occurring," Tolbert-Banks said.
These tools of respect for self and others will get us through this crisis.
After all of this is over, all that will have really matter is how we treated each other.
