How to organize your closet and pantry

One professional organizer is sharing ways to help you get a fresh start in your home.

INDIANAPOLIS — A new month can mean a fresh start, and for many, that means organizing the spaces in your home. One professional organizer is sharing ways to help you get started in your closet and pantry.

"Any project we do, we pull everything out of the space, and a big piece of what we do with our clients is we edit," said Maria Baer, from The Baer Minimalist. "It's truly about looking at your belongings and deciding is this still something that deserves to be in my home?"

Baer recommends going with a "one in, one out" policy by replacing a current item when you purchase a new one.

For closets specifically, she simply recommends using the same hangers to maintain a minimal feel.

"It's not the first thing you would think about, but it's a very low-cost way to make a huge difference,' Baer said. "Good hangers will preserve your clothes, too."

She also encourages finding a system that works for you and putting items on display so they're not forgotten.

In the pantry, she first goes through and checks every expiration date. For decanted items, she makes sure to write an expiration date.

Once she determines what has expired and what's staying, she puts items into zones. She added an over-the-door rack, a tiered riser for canned goods or condiments, a turn table and baskets that make good use for the space.
