Cat stuck in tree in Hamilton County rescued by volunteer firefighters

"Best we can figure, Ralph still has all nine of his lives," the Jackson County Fire Department said.

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. — A band of volunteer firefighters in Hamilton County are being praised after saving a life — a cat's, to be more specific.

The Jackson Township Fire Department received a call from a family after they exhausted their attempts of trying to get the cat, named Ralph, down from a tree Sunday, Oct. 20. The family cat found himself stuck nearly 40 feet up in the air.

The family made it a point to inform dispatch this was "in fact, not a prank."

Ralph's family and neighbor believe a dog may have chased the cat up the tree.

After some coaxing, fire crews said Ralph came down to 30 feet. He wanted to come all the way down, but he couldn't find the courage to do it himself.

That's when fire crews got a ladder from the engine, and one of the firefighters made his way up to save Ralph.

Ralph!

Earlier today, A shift E355 was dispatched for a small animal rescue. The family called after exhausting their attempts to get the cat down. The family made a point to inform dispatch this was in fact not a prank. Upon their arrival, Lt. McComiskey and Probationary FF/Medic Dubois confirmed the cat, Ralph, was in fact stuck in the tree. At the time of their arrival, he was approximately 35-40ft in the air. According to Ralph’s family and the neighbor, it’s thought the neighbors dogs may have chased Ralph up the tree. After some coaxing, Ralph came down to approximately 30ft. He showed continuous interest in wanting to return to the earth but just couldn’t find the courage to make the attempt. The crew retrieved a ladder from the engine and FF DuBois made his way up to Ralph. After returning to the ground, Ralph immediately ran back home. Great work, A shift! Best we can figure, Ralph still has all 9 of his lives.
