'Food in Transit' program to provide free, locally-grown produce in Indianapolis

The hours for the program will be 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays from June 13 to Sept. 29.

INDIANAPOLIS — IndyGo and Growing Places Indy will kick-off a seventh year of the "Food in Transit" program.

The program makes fresh, healthy and locally grown produce available free of charge at the Julia M. Carson Transit Center, located at 201 E. Washington St.

The hours for the program will be 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Thursday from June 13 to Sept. 29. On the second and fourth Thursdays, there will be cooking demonstrations, free prepackaged items and healthy recipes.

“Food in Transit” will feature engaging cooking demonstrations, free prepackaged items and healthy recipes.

"It used to cost me for my house to feed four people, it would cost me about $200 a week. I'm spending $600 now a week, and I can barely afford my rent," Alisha Scott said.

Scott said having the ability to pick up fresh produce every Thursday downtown will be a big help feeding her kids.

"They love strawberries, bananas, apples, oranges," Scott said. "I think it's amazing that they came down here to help people because most people don't even think about that."

The programs are part of the city working to address issues of food access and insecurity in Indianapolis neighborhoods.

"This is helping us meet our riders' critical needs beyond the bus," said Lesley Gordon, with IndyGo.
