PLAINFIELD, Ind. — One local police agency is getting a new four-legged crime fighter, and she's not your typical police dog.
The Plainfield Police Department announced the induction of it's newest officer, a boxer mix named Newt.
Newt was found to be a victim of animal cruelty whose owner was recently convicted of numerous criminal charges. She was rescued by the PPD and Hendricks County Animal Shelter (HCAS) in April 2023 when she was nearly starved to death.
After living at the HCAS during her recovery, Newt was noticed by a police handler for the PPD who said she had certain qualities making her a candidate for their program, and decided to eventually add her to canine police program.
Newt was adopted by Plainfield police, and after several weeks of training, she was certified as both a therapy dog and a gun detection dog.
"She has already been making a difference this week in the Plainfield Schools," the PPD wrote in a release. "From being nearly starved to death to now being a full-fledged police K-9, Newt is a hero in our eyes, and we hope in yours too."
