INDIANAPOLIS — Firefighters rescued a brood of day-old ducklings who found themselves stuck on Monument Circle Wednesday.
An IMPD officer alerted IFD to the ducklings, who were born in a flower pot near the Soldiers & Sailors Monument on Tuesday, May 21. The ducks' mother and six of her babies climbed into one of the pools alongside the monument. The ducklings then got swept into one of the drains.
Firefighters used a strainer basket to rescue five of the ducklings. The sixth was rescued by hand by a firefighter who waded into the pool.
Firefighters placed the ducks in a box on the flower pot so their mother could safely reunited with them.
Workers with Glenroy Construction then built a pair of ramps to go into the water so the ducks can get out of the water more easily. Screens around the pool will be replaced Thursday morning.
