'Women in Blue' cast, creator preview TV series based on Mexico's first female police force

Starring Bárbara Mori, Ximena Sariñana, Natalia Téllez and Amorita Rasgado, "Women in Blue" begins streaming Wednesday, July 31 on Apple TV+.

INDIANAPOLIS — "Anything you can do, I can do better."

That popular lyric from Broadway musical "Annie Get Your Gun" is applied by four women in Mexico in 1971.

Based on the compelling true story, "Women in Blue" follows four women who defy the extremely conservative norms of the time by joining Mexico's first female police force — only to find out that their squad is a publicity stunt to distract the media from a serial killer on the loose.

"This is such a personal and incredible show," said Fernando Rovzar, co-creator, showrunner, executive producer, director and writer. "I call it incredible – not because I had anything to do with it – but because of the actresses and the crew – hundreds of people from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia – that created the first full-language Spanish show for Apple TV+."

Here is what each of the four leading actresses said about their respective characters:

  • Bárbara Mori: "María is a very dedicated mother and a loyal wife who believed all her life that the secret to happiness was to find a good man, become a mother and have a perfect family — until one day, she discovers something that changes her perception of reality, and she has to confront a new truth in her life."
  • Ximena Sariñana: "Ángeles is a very different woman for the times and for very different reasons. Ángeles is on the spectrum, so she has to deal with that before there was even a diagnosis for this kind of thing. She's a woman who's been told her whole life that she doesn't belong."
  • Natalia Téllez: "Valentina, who is sisters with María, is a free-spirit. She's involved in demonstrations and riots. She loves rock 'n' roll, freedom, bars, open relationships. She thinks the revolution is possible, that they'll be changing the world."
  • Amorita Rasgado: "Gabina is the daughter of a police commander. Her three brothers are police officers. She is a woman who grew up in the police fashion because at the time, they didn't talk about anything else. She discovers that if she wants to become a police officer, she has to leave her house."

As a groundbreaking production for Apple TV+, the cast and crew are optimistic for additional seasons.

"I am absolutely hopeful. My mind is racing for ideas for a second season. I won't have any sort of confirmation until the show comes out and we see how people react to it," Rovzar said. "If there's one season, I'll be eternally grateful. If there's two, three or 10, I think there limitless stories we can tell about these women."
