INDIANAPOLIS — Get ready for some top-tier action — and laughs — in Netflix's "The Brothers Sun."
The TV series follows a gangster (Justin Chien) traveling from Taiwan to Los Angeles to protect his strong-willed mother (Michelle Yeoh) and oblivious younger brother (Sam Song Li) after an assassination attempt on their father (Johnny Kou).
And you may remember Yeoh — also known for roles in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Crazy Rich Asians" — is coming off her first Oscar win in 2023 for "Everything Everywhere All at Once."
"It was a dream come true," Li said of working with Yeoh. "It's unreal. She's so good, and I think she brings out the best in all of us, truly. You can really feel her experience on set."
"The Brothers Sun" has an 84% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a lot of critics highlighting the visually impressive action sequences, typically involving Chien's character.
"It was grueling. At the most, I was training 10 times a week, learning new martial arts, solidifying the ones I already knew, learning choreography, learning how to work with weapons," Chien said. "As a lifelong fan of martial arts and action films, I've always wanted to do it, and so getting to do it with some of the best trainers and performers in the world was really surreal, and I was super lucky."
Also hilariously popping up later in the series is actor John Cho, best known for his roles in "Star Trek" and "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" — but he only appears in "The Brothers Sun" as a reference for the characters to stay at his fictional mansion as a hideout.
"As much as I wish actors could make that much money, I don't think it is (his house)," Li said. "I think John Cho is a lot more humble than he's portrayed."
"He was a really good sport about it. He gave us permission, and I think he enjoyed it as well," Chien added.
All eight episodes of "The Brothers Sun" are now streaming on Netflix.
