'We were speechless' | Dan + Shay discuss history-making double chair on 'The Voice'

The country duo will make their coaching debut on the reality competition show's 25th season, which premieres Monday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

INDIANAPOLIS — It's not every day you get to chat with a chart-topping country duo like Dan + Shay. You could say I was "speechless."

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney are making history in the 25th season of NBC's "The Voice" as they become the show's first-ever coaching duo.

"We were speechless as well. I like that, that's a good intro," Dan said. "We never thought it was even a possibility. We feel like that is reserved for the greatest of the greats. I don't know how we got in there. Don't tell anyone — we fooled a lot of people."

Dan + Shay will join John Legend, Chance the Rapper and Reba McEntire as coaches for the show's quarter-century season — and don't expect the double chair to fight the queen of country for an artist.

"There's really no competition there. If Reba turns and we both turn and we're going after a country artist, we throw in the towel," Dan said. "We gotta use all the shenanigans and gags — the blocks, the steal."

You'd think a challenge would present itself with two coaches when one coach likes an artist and the other doesn't, but Dan + Shay say that scenario never came into play because they're always on the same page.

"We've been together for over 10 years now, and I feel like we're just like the old married couple. I know what he's thinking. We finish each other's 'sentences,'" Shay said, with Dan finishing in unison. "There was a learning curve. We forgot there were mics on us at all times."
