INDIANAPOLIS — (NOTE: The story below contains minor spoilers from the first season of "Bad Sisters.")
The Garvey sisters are back for a second season of "Bad Sisters" on Apple TV+.
"We arrive at the story two years later from the death of JP and everything that happens," said Eva Birthistle ("The Last Kingdom," "Ae Fond Kiss"), who plays Ursula. "At first, it seems like they're getting on reasonably well – some better than others – and then, suddenly, a suitcase is dragged out of the lake, and that changes everything."
In the first season of the critically acclaimed dark comedy, investigators are looking at the five Irish sisters as the prime suspects in one of their husband's deaths.
"As we begin Season 2, (Grace) is in a beautiful state of bliss, but of course, as the audience is very aware, she's carrying this big, guilty secret," said Anne-Marie Duff ("Nowhere Boy," "Suffragette") of her character's storyline.
An excellent addition to the second season is the peculiar Angelica, played by Emmy nominee Fiona Shaw ("Killing Eve," Harry Potter films).
"She's such a brilliant added element, and I think people were like, 'What's going to happen if JP's dead? What could happen in Season 2? Who could match that?' And we were like, 'Don't worry, we've got Fiona Shaw,'" said Eve Hewson ("The Perfect Couple," "Flora & Son"), who plays Becka.
The first season, which has a 100% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, became a word-of-mouth success, earning Emmy nominations for lead actress (Sharon Horgan), directing, writing and casting.
"I think you can tell from watching us that we have a lot of fun making this. It's super easy, super supportive. It's a lot of fun. We laugh a lot. We have become a lot like sisters," said Sarah Greene ("Penny Dreadful," "Normal People"), who plays Bibi.
"It's so much fun. It does feel like a real family. We work really hard at putting a crew together who all love the show and want to tell the same story," executive producer and director Dearbhla Walsh said. "The sisters are as best friends off-screen and a bunch of brilliant women."
With a second season, "Bad Sisters" has already expanded on its source material, a Belgian TV series called "Clan." Does that mean a third season is a possibility?
"I didn't even know there'd be a second season. Then, an idea comes into your head, and you're like, 'This is absolutely how it should continue,'" said Horgan ("Catastrophe," "Game Night"), who plays Eva and is also one of the show's creators and writers.
New episodes of "Bad Sisters" are released Wednesdays through Dec. 25 on Apple TV+.
