Yes, Ilana Glazer confirms the opening scene in 'Babes' is based on a real occurrence

"Babes," also starring Michelle Buteau and directed by Pamela Adlon, is now in theaters.

INDIANAPOLIS — One of the best-reviewed films of the summer so far is a raunchy comedy starring Ilana Glazer ("Broad City," "Rough Night") and Michelle Buteau ("Survival of the Thickest," "First Wives Club").

Currently at a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, "Babes" follows inseparable childhood best friends who are now in different phases of adulthood. When Glazer's character gets pregnant after a one-night stand, her friendship with Buteau's character faces its greatest challenge.

"I had so much fun writing this. I was just a few months pregnant when I was writing this with my co-writer Josh Rabinowitz, whose wife was pregnant, and we were kind of in the same situation together," Glazer said. "We were putting together a list of the funniest things that were happening to us as we were both preparing to have kids."

And here's a spoiler-free sneak peek: The first scene is some of the funniest 10 minutes you'll watch — think "Bridesmaids" food poisoning or "Anchorman" fight with other news stations.

"Every moment of this movie is coming from an authentic place," Glazer said. "(Producer) Susie Fox has a friend of a friend who didn't realize how much faster the second kid was going to come, so this woman's husband couldn't even get home to drive her to the hospital. The woman was driving – crowning – to the hospital and then crawling at the hospital, the baby coming up so much faster. And we were like, 'Yeah, we can put that in. That's pretty good.' You can't open a movie better than that."

Pamela Adlon arrives for the world premiere of "Babes" during the South by Southwest Film Festival on Saturday, March 9, 2024, in Austin, Texas.

The 109-minute comedy is directed by Emmy winner Pamela Adlon ("Better Things," "King of the Hill").

"She brings this rock star energy and a texture and a playfulness to set that was really interesting and kept things fresh," Glazer said of Adlon. "She's a real champion of actors. I felt so empowered by the way she made me feel as an actor."

"Babes" is now in theaters.
