Indianapolis saxophonist takes 'America's Got Talent' stage Tuesday night

B. Thompson, a saxophonist from the west side of Indianapolis, made his debut on the NBC show Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Channel 13.

INDIANAPOLIS — Another talented Hoosier has advanced on this season of "America's Got Talent."

B. Thompson, a saxophonist from the west side of Indianapolis, made his debut on Tuesday's show. He performed "What's Love Got To Do With It" by Tina Turner.

Judges Sofia Vergara and Howie Mandel raved at Thompson's performance, while Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell were a little more hesitant.

"That was so sexy," Vergara said. "You looked amazing on that stage."

"I think you're very talented. However, you're going to have to come up with something which is more than that," Cowell said.

But after deliberation, all four judges voted to send Thompson into the next round.

Thompson's career as a professional saxophonist has placed him on stages all around the globe, but he said his love for smooth jazz started right here in Indianapolis.

"If it wasn't for the potent music community we have in Indianapolis, I wouldn't be where I am today. It's kind of cool to grow up in a city where there are a lot of historical musical context and history," Thompson told 13News.

He currently tours with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, another Indianapolis native. Because of that, he's no stranger to performing in front of thousands of people.

"I feel like I'm depositing energy into my audience sometimes when I'm playing. I kind of remove myself from the equation," said Thompson.

But he said Tuesday's performance is different, because this time he will be front and center and performing on "America's Got Talent."

"I was not expecting it when my manager called me and said one of the producers reached out and they want you to do a selected audition," said Thompson.

"With 'America's Got Talent,' what makes it a little different, is you become the centerpiece. Are you truly ready for the world to see you, critique you and understand you and pick you a part," said Thompson.

This isn't his first time auditioning for the show, but he said one thing he's learned in his career on the road is to always stay prepared for unexpected opportunities.

"Patience is everything. Just let things happen when they are supposed to happen," said Thompson.

He hopes his story inspires other viewers.

"No matter how common or regular you think your gift is, you're the only person that can do it like you. That's what makes you unique and standout," said Thompson.
