INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis native Morgan Anita Wood will make her Broadway debut as Eliza in the award-winning musical "Hamilton."

Wood will start her performances on Tuesday, July 16 at the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York City. She has been in previous performances of the musical across North America — including Puerto Rico, Honolulu, Toronto, Los Angeles and San Francisco — according to a news release.

"After nearly six years on tour with Hamilton, the opportunity to make my Broadway debut in this incredible show is truly a dream come true. Playing the role of Eliza, I feel so lucky to share this story with audiences every night," Wood said. "I’m overwhelmed in the best way. And my gratitude is boundless."

Wood debuted in "Hamilton" in 2019 in the show’s limited run in Puerto Rico, performing with creator Lin-Manuel Miranda in support of hurricane relief efforts for the island. The release said she continued across multiple touring companies through 2023, understudying all three Schuyler sisters and later playing Eliza in the "And Peggy Tour."

“I owe so much of who I am as a performer and theatre lover in general to my Indy upbringing. I had the good fortune of having so much access to the performing arts. Whether it was performing at Footlite Musicals, working on the tech crew backstage at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theater or earning my first equity points at 8 years old in Annie at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre (just to name a few), the arts scene in Indy gave me a foundation to love and learn about this art form," Wood said. "I am indebted to the Indy artists, peers, directors and friends who gave me permission not only to embrace these passions of mine but to also pursue them.”

"'Hamilton' has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre — a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education," a spokesperson for the musical said.

It features a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway. The book, music and lyrics are all by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

"Hamilton" has won Tony, Grammy, and Olivier awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.
