INDIANAPOLIS — A local organization on Indy's north side is hoping to destigmatize the priority of mental health within the Black community.
On Saturday, Coburn Place hosted it's "Taking Care of You" interactive workshops at the TWC Event Center to educate people on mental health within the Black community.
Around 38% of people are more stressed during the holidays, and 64% of people living with an existing mental health illness report worsened conditions, according to reports. Additionally, many older adults in the Black community view mental health conditions as a sign of personal weakness, making the holiday season especially tough.
It started with mindfulness and meditation followed by a variety of open discussions on topics like how cultural and familial narratives shape people along with free lunch.
Children who attended were able to do guided activities with local artist Angelita Hampton to help boost their self-esteem.
The event ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
