INDIANAPOLIS — Over 15,000 people made their way to Military Park on Saturday for the Indy Juneteenth Festival.
For seven years, Indy Juneteenth brings together local businesses, organizations and community members to celebrate the emancipation of slaves in 1865.
"We do have a troubled past as a nation but it's important to promote the beautiful moments that did happen so everyone knows where we come from, how far we've come and the work we have ahead of us," co-founder James Webb said.
The celebration is in its seventh year, and always starts with the parade. This day leads up to a week full of events.
"Just to see how beautiful everyone looks when they come together and working together, it's just a beautiful feeling," Webb said.
Organizers hope people at this festival take this celebration into their communities and share more on the holiday.
"It seems like more and more people this year are coming out and they are seeing what the holiday is all about," Deborah Washington said.
