INDIANAPOLIS — Today will be a busy weather day with showers and storms, some strong to severe possible.
A storm complex circulating around an area of low pressure to our west has prompted multiple rounds of heavy rain and severe storms across portions of Missouri and Illinois.
This storm system is set to track through Indiana today and will be that trigger for our storm risk.
First, a wave of potentially heavy rainfall will push into the northern half of the state after the lunch hour with scattered showers and storms continuing throughout the afternoon and evening. Locally heavy rain could bring 1-2 inches of rainfall potential to this zone. The threat of rain and increased clouds will limit daytime heating across the northern tier of the state keeping high temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s.
The highest risk of severe weather will set-up along and south of the I-70 corridor where the best parameters are in place including sufficient moisture, atmospheric energy, and heat. Temperatures will peak in the mid 80s throughout the metro and into the mid to upper 80s south.
Once this storm system arrives, approximately around 5 p.m. in western Indiana, storms will be in an environment where rotation is possible. The risk of seeing tornado warnings in the zone along and south of I-70 will be highest between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. before this system diminishes and tracks east after 10 p.m.
Scattered showers and storms will linger into the overnight for areas north before tapering off early Sunday morning. We'll then have lots of dry time Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds. Staying miserably muggy with dew points in the low 70s and highs in the low 80s.
Another round of strong to severe storms is possible late Sunday night, mainly after 10 p.m. through 2 a.m. early Monday. The primary threat with this wave is damaging wind gusts.
After a mainly dry start to the day Monday, showers and storms will fire back up in the afternoon but storms are not expected to be severe. Monday will be a cooler day with highs in the upper 70s.
