Live Doppler 13 Weather Blog: Gusty winds, bitter cold persist

Winter storm eases by Christmas but we'll be updating over the weekend on a clipper system that brings accumulating snow Monday.

INDIANAPOLIS — Winter Storm Warning continues until at least 7 a.m. Saturday morning due to persistently strong wind causing blowing and drifting of snow (especially north-to-south roads) plus dangerous wind chills in the -35 to -25 range.

So far, Friday's "high" temperature Indianapolis is 1° just before 10 p.m.  If that holds, it would tie the daily record cold high temperature from this date in 1983.  It would also be the coldest high since February 1996.  Just an absolutely brutally cold airmass that combined with the strong wind delivered windchills -40 to -30 most of the day.

Travel will be slow at best and impossible for some in the many Travel Warnings that are in effect in central Indiana.  We're still expecting wind gusts to remain near/above 30 mph into Christmas Eve.  That combined with additional light snow and temperatures in the 0 to 10 range keep roads slick and slow. Use caution if you're heading out.

Wind eases on Christmas Day and we're expecting some sunshine after morning flurries and light snow.  There will still be a covering of snow for Christmas morning.

Though we've been focusing a good deal on the current winter storm, we want to keep you prepared for the likelihood of a clipper system bringing a new round of snow potential to us on Monday.

It's subject to change being three days away, but most model guidance has been in agreement on arriving during the Monday morning commute with accumulating snow much of the day.

This will be a different type of snow compared to the fine flakes that feel over the past 24 hours. It should be a fluffier snow that can accumulate better and would be enough to shovel.  Also to note, there will be much less wind too. However, impacts to travel would be likely.

Track and timing can change so please follow our forecast this weekend.  And please share with other that more snow is on the way, because we don't want this system to surprise anyone on Monday after being busy Christmas weekend.
