Breezy and cold tonight for Circle of Lights in downtown Indianapolis

It will be the coldest Circle of Lights in almost 20 years. Bundle up tonight while heading downtown.

INDIANAPOLIS — If we stay below 32 degrees, it will be the coldest Black Friday in Indianapolis since 2005. We have had several in the mid 30s and above, but we haven't stayed below freezing all day long for this day after Thanksgiving in almost 20 years.

It looks cold, cloudy, and breezy for today. Plus there may be some snow flurries at times around central Indiana. No accumulations are expected. Heavier snow from the lake-effect storm will stay in far northern Indiana.

Circle of Lights schedule:

  • Pre show begins at 5:30PM
  • Main show begins at 6:00PM
  • WTHR live coverage begins at 6 PM (can also watch on WTHR+)

During the evening, northwest winds will continue to gust between 15 to 25 mph, keeping wind chills in the teens. Depending on where you are downtown, the skyscrapers can block the wind or help funnel the wind. It will feel very cold tonight.

Wind chills across central Indiana will range from 10 to 18 degrees. Northern Indiana will have wind chills in the low teens. Southern Indiana will have wind chills in the 20s.

Snow chances ahead

As cold air streams over the Great Lakes, snow showers are possible region-wide, while concentrated, intense bands of lake-effect snow hug the eastern and east-southeastern shores of the Great Lakes.

Through Saturday night, there will be chances for some snow showers in three specific areas.

  • Northern Indiana:  Continued lake-effect snow is likely. Several inches are possible near the state line with Michigan.
  • Central Indiana:  On-and-off flurries are possible, no accumulation expected
  • Southern Indiana:  A dose of snow showers from a clipper system may bring a dusting to two inches across the southern third of the state, mainly south of Bloomington, Saturday afternoon.

All the snows mentioned above would be on the drier side or more powdery.

Stay warm and watch for snow showers at times.
