ANGOLA, Ind. (WTHR) - Trine University used the oldest trick in the book to clinch a place in the College World Series.
The Thunder (35-6) was protecting a two-run lead with two outs and two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning of their NCAA Super Regional game against Geneseo.
After senior Kate Saupe got the ball back from the catcher following a pitch, she spun and pretended to throw to second base, trying to catch a runner off the bag. The Trine shortstop and second baseman both dove as if the throw was wild and the outfielders ran toward the fence, carrying on the charade.
As the runner took off for third base, Saupe chased her down and applied the tag for the game-winning out.
Trine will travel to Tyler, Texas to face Illinois Wesleyan in the Division III College World Series on Friday. The double-elimination tournament will crown a champion early next week.
