TORONTO, ON — Alexander Rossi will miss Sunday's IndyCar race on the streets of Toronto after breaking his thumb in a crash during Friday's practice session.
Rossi was entering Turn 8 of the Toronto Street Course when his car pushed wide and hit a tire barrier before making contact with the retaining wall and coming to a stop. While getting out of his wrecked No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, Rossi was seen favoring his right thumb.
Shortly after being seen and released from the IndyCar medical staff, Arrow McLaren confirmed Rossi broke his right thumb in the crash and that he would be unable to compete the rest of the weekend.
As of the publishing of this article, Arrow McLaren has not announced a replacement driver for Rossi. So far this season, the team has seen six different drivers get behind the wheel of an Arrow McLaren car.
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Pato O'Ward is now the only driver in the Arrow McLaren stable to have started every race this season in papaya orange. With Rossi no longer able to drive in Sunday's race, whomever is tapped to replace him will join Callum Ilott, Theo Pourchaire and Nolen Siegel as racers who have been contracted to drive at least one race for Arrow McLaren in 2024.
David Malukas was scheduled to race the full season for Arrow McLaren, but was dropped from the team after missing the first four races due to a wrist injury.
Rossi's injury comes just two weeks after it was announced he will not return to Arrow McLaren in 2025.
