AHMEDABAD, India (WTHR) – A malfunction on a pendulum ride at an amusement park in India killed two people and injured dozens more.
The accident happened around 5:40 p.m. local time on Sunday.
According to The Times of India, the load-bearing cable snapped, causing the structure to come crashing down to the ground with people strapped in their seats.
Witnesses say the cable snapped when the pendulum carriage was about 20 feet above the ground. Passengers facing the inside toward the stairs to the ride felt the impact of the pendulum crashing into the structure.
Video posted on Twitter shows amusement park visitors standing in shock as the watch the ride come crashing down.
The victims killed in the accident were identified as a 22 and 24-year-old. All of the victims on the ride were between the ages of 16 and 26. At least three others are in critical condition.
Representatives of the amusement park have been detained by police, according to The Times of India.
Police tell them, “We are checking aspects such as operation and maintenance of the ride. Even agencies responsible for inspection will be probed for accountability."
