WASHINGTON — There's good news for fans of Netflix's hit show "Wednesday," which stars Jenna Ortega as the titular Wednesday Addams. But it's not the season 2 news you've probably been waiting for.
Multiple outlets, including Deadline and ABC News, have confirmed that Netflix is eyeing a spin-off series focusing on the character of Uncle Fester.
Currently titled "Fester," the show is in early development at Netflix, and is being produced by MGM Television, according to ABC.
Uncle Fester was a relatively small role in the first season of Wednesday. The character, played by Fred Armisen, appeared alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán as Wednesday's parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams.
The original show from Netflix, based on the spooky and kooky Addams Family characters, is a murder mystery about the young Wednesday Addams as she attends high school at Nevermore Academy.
The show, which premiered in November 2022, was one of the streaming giant's most popular shows of all time, setting a platform record for the most hours viewed in a week for an English-language series.
There was speculation that Amazon's purchase of MGM Television would cut the series short, but Amazon and Netflix reached a deal in July to produce more Wednesday episodes.
“It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world,” showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first."
In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gough said he and Millar were excited to further develop Wednesday's relationships with Morticia and Enid, her friend and roommate at Nevermore.
