Thousands take part in downtown Indy's Apex Benefits Monumental Kids 5K

They took to the streets Wednesday for the event that supports local schools.

INDIANAPOLIS — On Wednesday, thousands of people took to the streets of downtown Indianapolis. Students, educators, mentors and others were all there for the Apex Benefits Monumental Kids 5K.

The event started outside Lucas Oil Stadium. Then, three miles later, we saw the first person cross the finish line, a victory on the field at the home of the Colts.

For some, it was their first time taking part in this kind of race.

"I was running with my brother since he's done it in the past. The whole time he was telling me not to stop jogging," said Mason Castaneda.

"For many of them, it's their first time downtown. A lot of them it's their first 5K ever and certainly when they get to go inside it's a whole new experience," said Jed Cornforth, Beyond Monumental's executive director.

"We were lucky with the weather. It's the first time we've been able to finish inside the stadium on the field," Cornforth added.

The event grows each year and helps raise funds to support local schools.
