WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WTHR) - Deputies in Tippecanoe County are trying to track down a pair of headstones that went missing from a cemetery in West Lafayette.
Sheriff’s deputies were called earlier this week when a groundskeeper at the Sandridge Cemetery noticed the two headstones were gone as he was mowing the lawn.
The worker told investigators he is familiar with the last names on the headstones and the both read Thomas. However, officials for the cemetery said they have not been able to determine who exactly the headstones belonged to.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff Bob Goldsmith said the incident is being investigated as a theft.
"Why people do this, I have no idea," said Sheriff Goldsmith. "I mean if you put it in your living room, someone is going to say, 'Hey, what's that for?' or in your garage, it is a little odd."
Authorities say they still want to get in contact with family to make sure they didn't remove the stones.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department at (765) 423-9321.
