Plainfield teen 'rings the bell' after completing leukemia treatment, gets surprise visit from 40 first responders

Benny Ray, 17, aspires to follow in his father's footsteps and become a firefighter.

INDIANAPOLIS — Plainfield resident Benny Ray, 17, celebrated the completion of his treatment for leukemia Thursday at Riley Hospital for Children.

Benny rang the bell at the hospital to mark the milestone after he had received 860 days of chemotherapy, the hospital said.

While completing treatment was more than enough cause for celebration, the day was made even more memorable by a surprise visit from more than 40 first responders from the Plainfield Fire Department. They even brought a fire truck for the celebration.

Benny aspires to become a professional firefighter. His father, Michael Ray, is a 17-year veteran of PFD.
