INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A northwest Indianapolis grocery store has reopened after temporarily shutting down for health violations.
The Marion County Health Department responded to a complaint from a shopper at the Safeway at 3008 W. Kessler Blvd. North Drive Wednesday. An inspector found mouse droppings in food areas and dead mice still in traps. The inspector also found spilled sugar, flour and salt in the grocery area.
The department said the store had not been recently visited by a pest control company, which they recommend to address current issues and prevent future problems. Since the violations were not able to be corrected while the inspector visited the store, the health department suspended the store's license, closing them until the violations were corrected.
"You got to be sanitized. Especially dealing with food. People feed food to their babies," said customer Javia Sims. "We already have enough germs going around in this world and everyday life, so they need to be closed down. They need to be cleaned. They can't be exposing that to our children."
The store reopened Friday after health inspectors returned to the store and found the most critical violations had been taken care of.
