INDIANAPOLIS —
An overnight fire at a commercial laundry facility east of Fountain Square led to a large water main break that flooded Prospect Street.
Just after midnight, Indianapolis fire crews arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of the one-story building and tapped onto a hydrant nearby.
That's when the water main underneath the street broke and lifted the street about 16 inches.
Heavy water started flowing and Citizens Energy had to come to the scene to close off the hydrant. In the meantime, traffic is restricted and service is cut to eight customers in the area. Citizens posted on its website an estimate the main will be repaired by 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
The fire was traced to a metal barrel containing discarded items that was smoldering, and was out within ten minutes.
Nobody was hurt.
