INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Fire investigators are looking into what started an early morning house fire near downtown on Saturday.

Indianapolis fire fighters were called to the 900 block of Woodlawn Avenue about 3:30 a.m. Saturday for the report of a residence fire.

The first units on reported heavy fire coming from the back of two houses. The fire started in a vacant house and spread to the one next door where a 25-year-old man lived. Neighbors alerted him to the fire and that it was spreading to his house. He was able to get out with his cat safely.

Neighbors told firefighters that squatters had been in and out of the vacant house. Damage to both homes is estimated at $150,000.

After getting the fire out firefighters heard a kitten that they located in an outside well by the back of the vacant house. The kitten was about six feet down in hole and covered with muck. Firefighters were able to rescue the kitten and cleaned it up. They took the kitten back to the station and will take it to a vet later today. They named the cat Ember.
