INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A Hoosier Vietnam veteran, who is already a Medal of Honor recipient, has now also received the state's highest honor.
Governor Eric Holcomb presented the 2018 Sachem Award to Sgt. First Class Sammy Davis.
Along with the Congressional Medal of Honor, Davis has also received a Purple Heart and many other medals. His unit came under fire in 1967 and, despite being wounded, Davis was able to fire several rounds at the enemy, then used an air mattress to cross a river and rescue wounded soldiers.
"I want to thank Governor Holcomb for this beautiful and prestigious award. I will continue to try to live up to the Sachem Award and what it embodies," Davis said.
The Sachem is given each year to a Hoosier in recognition of a lifetime of excellence.
