Hoosiers excited for Circle Centre Mall redevelopment

The $600 million proposal will include outdoor walkways, plazas and a bridge over Maryland Street to connect the two sides.

INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosiers are invested in the vision of the new owners of the Circle Centre Mall.

"I think it's exciting. It's a big place right in the heart of Indy, so I'm anxious to see that," Rhonda Coulter said.

Once a booming place, some say the mall is just a shell of what they remember.

"In high school, I used to come down here all the time. Downtown was awesome, but now, it seems boring," Jordan Ragland said.

"Lately, I don't come here often, but we used to come all the time. I loved when they first opened,"  Coulter said.

"For the arts, the features when they did the different activities like the modeling and the different pop-up shops they had, it was great," Suzette Sweatt said.

The new owner, Hendricks Commercial Properties, has big plans.

The $600 million proposal will include outdoor walkways, plazas and a bridge over Maryland Street to connect the two sides.

"We want to bring in retail, restaurants, and entertainment, but also bring in some housing in multi different aspects and more and more offices as we continue to drive that, but really a true mixed-use component all the way around the board," Rob Gerbitz said.

Many people are excited to see how the company will transform the mall after seeing the results of their other projects – Bottleworks downtown and Ironworks on the city's north side.

"I like the vibe it has. It has nice energy and stuff," Sweatt said. "So if they can bring that back, it would be awesome."

No matter what the plans are, they hope it brings life to downtown.

"Clothing stores, somewhere where people can hang out and chill," Ragland said.

"I would like to see more sustainability, more consistency, and bring more diversity in everything. I think it will be really good," Sweatt said.

"I think restaurants are good because of the Convention Center and all the people that come out of town. I think to have some more options that way will be good," Coulter said.

The project will be done in four different phases, starting with the south side of the building. The whole project is expected to be finished in 2033.
