WAYNE COUNTY, INDIANA, Ind. — Police in Wayne County are investigating a possible murder-suicide after a man and woman were found dead by police with gunshot wounds Monday.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said deputies were responding to a welfare check May 20 on Farlow Road, east of U.S. Highway 27 and roughly five miles south of downtown Richmond, when they found the two people.
The woman, identified by police as 30-year-old Erika Painter, of Centerville, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, identified as 38-year-old Dustin Creech, of Richmond, was taken to Reid Health hospital in Richmond and transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, where he was later pronounced dead.
"While the investigation is ongoing, initial findings suggest that this may have been a case of murder-suicide," the sheriff's office said in a statement, noting a responding deputy heard shots fired as they were approaching the scene before discovering the two people.
"We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public," Wayne County Sheriff Randy Retter said in the statement. "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time."
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 765-973-9393.
