IMPD released edited video of police shooting on Indy's northeast side; suspect sentenced after plea deal

Dontriell Hood, the man who was shot, already agreed to one year in prison in a plea deal.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD has released edited bodycam and surveillance footage of a police shooting on the northeast side of Indianapolis in November 2023.

Dontriell Hood, the man who was shot, already agreed to one year in prison in a plea deal signed Aug. 16. He pleaded guilty to criminal recklessness and unlawful carrying of a handgun in an incident where he was shot by police Nov. 10, 2023.

IMPD said the Marion County Prosecutor's Office requested a protective order, which prevented the release of the certain evidence, including the bodycam and surveillance footage. Since the criminal case is over, IMPD is now releasing the video.

Around 11 a.m. on Nov. 10, 2023, police responded to Hood firing about a dozen shots in the 3900 block of Caroline Avenue, near the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Some bullets hit a house across the street from Hood's home.

Officers arrived and can be heard through bodycam video saying, "Police, show me your hands. Walk towards us. Don't reach for the gun," and "lay flat on the ground."

In the video, one of the officers then says, "he dropped the gun," and Hood is seen walking toward the officers with his hands up.

But as Hood gets closer to the officers, he then runs back for an unknown reason.

One of the officers is heard in the video repeatedly saying, "Don't do it" before an officer fires a shot that hits Hood in one of his arms.

Surveillance video shows Hood apparently fall as he's running back, then crawl toward the gun he previously dropped. The edited surveillance video is zoomed in to show Hood allegedly picking up the gun before an officer shoots him.

The video then shows the officers applying a torniquet to Hood's arm and officers saying "We're gonna save your life" and "it's gonna hurt, but we're not gonna harm you."

The 2023 case was also a violation of Hood's community corrections sentence from an April 2022 case that was very similar. Hood pleaded guilty to firing shots at people fishing in Fall Creek. Police took Hood into custody after shooting him with a less lethal launcher. He was on house arrest when he fired the gunshots in November 2023.

At Hood's sentencing hearing Aug. 27, he asked for community corrections and mental health residential treatment instead of prison time.

Hood told Marion Superior Court Judge Marshelle Dawkins Broadwell that he suffers from schizophrenia.

"I really appreciate it if you could give me some help," Hood said. "At first, I was ashamed. I didn't know what schizophrenia was. But I had a therapist here. She gave me a sheet basically telling me what schizophrenia is. I know I definitely suffer from it. So, I would appreciate it if I could get some help."

The judge amended Hood's sentence in the 2022 case to add another year in prison for the violation.

Hood will return to home detention and mental health treatment after serving his prison time.
