INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A historic landmark in the Circle City is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation.

The Madame Walker Theatre, recently renamed the Madame Walker Legacy Center, is the recipient of a $15 million grant from Lilly Endowment.

The money will help refurbish and modernize the downtown facility.

On Monday, Oct. 12, 13News got a look inside the center to see some of the renovations.

The Walker is used to celebrate cultural diversity through the arts, something entrepreneur and founder Madame CJ Walker set out to do at its inception.

The Walker Board of Directors is chaired by longtime Indianapolis leader Joyce Rodgers.

“The fact that we care so much about it, the Lilly Endowment cares, I think that she would be so pleased. That building is 90 years old."

The Walker has also developed a first-ever collaboration with IUPUI that will offer unique programming, including cultural diversity learning for the Indianapolis community.

Listeners got a chance to learn more about the project during Thursday's Community Connection radio show wihh Terri Dee on Radio One.

The renovation, expected to take two years, will make the Walker a state-of-the-art downtown destination.
