Mother and son found dead in New Castle house fire

The fire happened in the 1000 block of I Avenue, near South Main Street.

NEW CASTLE, Ind. — A mother and son were found dead in a house fire in New Castle Tuesday evening, authorities said.

According to the New Castle Fire Department, crews were called shortly after 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5 to the 1000 block of I Avenue for a report of a house fire. Firefighters found heavy flames coming from the home. 

Two people, later identified by the Henry County coroner as 70-year-old Sandra Shipley and 48-year-old Brock Shipley, were found inside the home, and crews called for additional help in putting the fire out.

Both people were pronounced dead, the department said. The coroner said their causes of death are pending an autopsy.

No firefighters were injured.

Crews remained at the scene until around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The New Castle Fire Department and Indiana State Fire Marshal is handling the investigation into the cause of the fire.
